Connected * Care * Committed
After a 13-year volunteer career of K-12 Education Public Service in FMS District 5, I was curious to see how the newly chaptered K-12 Plus legislative initiative was going to be implemented in an already full and challenging day in the classroom. On March 24, 2023, I attended my first FMS board meeting and witnessed not only how the new K-12 Plus requirements were going to be addressed, but how other recently passed and chaptered legislation was going to impact the District.
As I attended more meetings, fond memories of volunteering in District 5 resurfaced and on May 11, 2023, I concluded that there were still opportunities to serve not only in District 5, but an even bigger population of students, families, and educators within the FMS District, and committed to run for the position. Although my daughter graduated from the class of 2019, I know I would enjoy serving a new set of students, families, and educators as part of the Class of 2036.
I am proud of the FMS School District and feel that my family, including my husband, daughter, and I, who all grew up and graduated from District 5, were prepared for both college and other educational opportunities that we all have pursued.
When my daughter enrolled in kindergarten at Ladera Elementary, my initial plans were to reenter the workforce full time when my daughter started school. Growing up in a family that helped others if they were able to, created an environment of recognizing and helping people if you can. Right from the beginning, I immediately recognized there was a great need in the public school system in many areas. I served in many roles and capacities throughout my 13 years of service and I got to know one-third of the students, siblings, and families of the class of 2019, as well as many educators along the way. My volunteer roles were diverse and included:
· Reading Assistant – Sight Word Helper
· Art Mom - Art Show Coordinator - Art Magnet Fundraiser Coordinator
· National History Day Judge
· FHS Girls Soccer Booster Club Treasurer
· FHS Girls Soccer Booster Club President
· My work with sight words as a reading assistant revealed that the more sight words a student knew, the more self-esteem they developed, which in turn helped to increase their reading pace and comprehension throughout the school year. I believe to this day that increasing the amount of sight words a student recognizes in their early reading years, reading literacy rates would increase and positively impact other areas such as math and test question comprehension, not only locally, but also throughout the state of New Mexico.
· Art Programs help students express themselves in many ways and in today’s world art concepts are being implemented in various technical college degree programs and industries including the world of accounting! Art classes are safe spaces for students of all levels within each grade, and teach students to respect themselves and other students, no matter if they are on the same developmental level or not. Leading the entire school of Ladera Elementary of 600+ students in an art to magnet fundraising project with a caveman theme, still came up in conversations with students 3 years later!
· Even at the high school level of volunteering, I had many roles within the soccer club and on the field including: nurse, a shoulder to cry on, and just someone who happened to be around if a student needed someone to talk to.
· I will never forget a parent, who also worked for the FMS District, telling me that the students miss us parents who volunteer for long periods of time and who move on as their children move on. When I asked why, she replied, “They trust you.” It was at that point I realized that the public school system may be the only positive environment and experience for approximately one half of the students attending public schools and is the core reason I am choosing to continue my journey of service …
“To aid in providing a positive learning experience for students that fosters an environment of building Lifelong Skills for Lifelong Success.”
